Chilean torpedo

Torpedo tremens is a ray species from the family of electric ray. They mostly live in sub-tropical climates before the Central and South American Pacific coast of Costa Rica to Chile. Torpedo peruana, described by Chirichigno 1963, is probably a synonym of Torpedo tremens.

Features

Torpedo tremens has the typical for the genus Torpedo slightly wider than long disc-shaped, consisting of body and pectoral fins, and reaches a length of 70 cm. The top is gray, the underside white.

Way of life

Torpedo tremens lives in subtropical regions mostly in very shallow water in tropical climates like Peru before they are seen at depths to 700 m. Like most representative of the family chasing smaller fish and mollusks, they stunned with their Elektroplaxe with punches to 45 volts and then consumed. The electric organ is also used for defense. Like all electric ray is the kind ovoviviparous.
