Chilecito

Chilecito is a city in the Argentine province of La Rioja, capital of the department of the same name and with 29 453 inhabitants ( 2001), the second largest city of the province. The city was founded in 1715 by the Spanish colonists Domingo Castro y Bazán.

Origin of the name

The name ' Chilecito ' means something like 'little Chile ', probably because in the mine early on worked many Chileans at Chilecito.

Location

Chilecito located on 1076 m altitude in the valley between the up to 4,920 m high Sierra de Velasco to the east and up to 6,250 m high Sierra de Famatina in the west; Both mountain ranges are part of the Sierras Pampeanas. The provincial capital of La Rioja is approximately 60 km in a straight line in a southeasterly direction away (but 200 km of road ), about 10 km south of the city lies Chilecito Nonogasta. By Chilecito the R.N. runs 40, the longest national highway in Argentina.

Near Chilecito the built in the early 20th century aerial ropeway Chilecito -La Mejicana that was with a length of 35 km long period, the longest cableway in the world and also the cable car to the highest situated mountain station is ( 4.600 m height ). The cable car was needed for ore mining in the mine La Mejicana in the Sierra de Famatina.
