Chimay Brewery

Chimay is a Trappist beer that is brewed in the Abbey of Notre- Dame de Scourmont in Chimay in the Belgian province of Hainaut.

Today, about 130,000 hectoliters annually Chimay brewed in the abbey. This is more than 10% of Belgian specialty beer market. One third of the production is exported. The bottling of about 35,000 bottles per hour currently happening outside of the monastery by laymen on the industrial site Baileux so as not to disturb the monastic life.

Chimay is unfiltered and unpasteurized.

Besides Chimay only five other Trappist beers must bear the proprietary label Authentic Trappist Product in Belgium: Achel, Westvleteren, Orval, Rochefort and Westmalle; and La Trappe in the Netherlands and since 2012 Engelszell in Austria.

History

1850 at the request of the Prince of Chimay, the Cistercian Abbey in Chimay Trappist abbey by monks of Saint Sixtus Westvleteren (see also Westvleteren beer) founded. There is brewed with a particularly delicate water since 1862 Chimay.

  • Chimay Dorée (Golden Chimay ): a blond table beer with an alcohol content of 4.8 %. Golden Bottle Cap, black sticker. It can be bought exclusively at the Abbey as well as in the neighboring hostel Poteaupré.

Enjoyment
