China National Nuclear Corporation

The China National Nuclear Corporation ( CNNC, Chinese National Nuclear Society, Chinese中国 核 工业 集团公司) is the largest operator of nuclear power plants in China. It was founded on 16 September 1988 by decree of the Chinese government. It combines nuclear weapons technology with civilian use thereof. It sees itself as a national government agency for nuclear energy and reports directly to the State Council of the People's Republic of China.

It operates, among others, the Changjiang nuclear power plant, the Qinshan nuclear power plant and nuclear power plant Chashma.

On 14 August 2009 the then head of CNNC Kang Rixin was dismissed from his position because of corruption and bribery.

Subsidiaries

  • Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute ( SNERDI: Shanghai Institute of Research and Design of Nuclear Technology ): involved in the planning of the Pakistani reactors Chashma Nuclear Power Plant III & IV; may invest up to 45 billion euros for the construction of five new nuclear reactors in the UK.

In July 2013 CNNC give up its plans to build a large uranium reprocessing plant for 6 billion euros in the estuary of the Pearl River.
