Chintila

Chintila († December 20 639) was on 12 March 636 to 20 December 639 king of the Visigoths.

Chintila was raised after the death of King Sisenand. How he came to power, and if an election was held, is unknown. He called the 5th and the 6th Council of Toledo. These councils preconceived special resolutions for the protection of threatened rebellion of the king and to protect his family after his death. Particular, it was forbidden to do after the king's death his gifts to his faithful reversed and touching the possession of his family. Agreements on future king elections lifetime of a ruler were forbidden under penalty of excommunication. It was decided that no one without a " general " choice ( electio omnium ) was allowed to attain the kingship. A determination of the 5th Council of Toledo that only a noble Goth was to be elected king and ambitions were moderately origin not to reject qualified, lets recognize that the imposition of a time to Chintilas Nichtgoten to kingship was a conceivable possibility.

The 638 held sixth Council of Toledo passed resolutions against the Jews, which, according to the council acts Chintila King was the driving force. Here to former anti-Jewish actions of the kings Reccared I. and Sisebut has been sustained. Their course exacerbated Chintila still, by openly announced his intention, completely exterminate the Jews in his kingdom, and not to tolerate non-Catholics. The earlier forcibly converted and then returned to their old faith Jews had to surrender their religious writings and undertake to renounce the Jewish rituals and festivals.

Leave some hints in the sources recognize that Chintila faced a fierce opposition rebellious nobility circles. However, he succeeded to elect his son as co-regent Tulga, which he secured his succession to the throne. As Chintila died Tulga was still a minor, but he could apparently peaceful succeed.
