In the east Chisi adjacent to the open waters of Lake Chilwa, the West is surrounded by flat marshland. Due to the changing water level of the lake and the shallow depth of the surrounding waters also the size of the island (an average of 12-21 km ² ) changes. In particularly low water level Chisi Iceland is within walking distance from the mainland.

On Chisi various traditional rules for the sustainable use of natural resources have developed, which have been preserved by the relative remoteness of the region to this day.
