Chisone

The Chisone ( französ. Cluson, Piedmontese Chison or Cleson ) is a high mountain river in the Cozie Alps in the Italian region Piedmont, near the French border. According to him, the Chisone is named.

The river has a length of about 70 km in the upper reaches of the character of a mountain torrent. It rises in about 2500 m above sea level, between the Punta Rognosa ( 3280 m), the Bric Ghinivert ( 3037 m) and Mount Barifreddo. A few kilometers west of its sources is on 2040 m height between the Chisone and the Susa Valley of the Pass of Sestriere, a famous winter sports resort ( Winter Olympics 2006 ).

First, the Chisone flows in a northerly direction, turns after about 15 km at Pragelato to the east and at Fenestrelle (1215 m) to the southeast. From about Perosa Argentina, where once was a silver mine and right ends of the large tributary Germanasca, the valley begins to widen. After the villages Pinasca and Villar Perosa the town of Pinerolo, the river reaches (375 m) and ends after 10 km, during the Pellice, a left-side tributary of the Po. In its lower reaches the Chisone is deposited huge quantities of river gravels (see web link) are clearly visible in the satellite image.

The valley and its surroundings is one of the so-called Waldensian valleys, a retreat for the Calvinist Waldenses. As a border area it also had military significance with great fortresses at Fenestrelle and Pinerolo. Tourist importance of winter sports and several long distance footpaths are (among others Sentiero Italia and Via Alpina ), as well as the Parco naturale della Val reserve Troncea.
