Chizumulu Island

Chizumulu is a small island in Lake Malawi. It belongs to Malawi, but is an enclave with its neighboring island of Likoma in the territorial waters of Mozambique.

Geography

Chizulumu administratively classified as district Likoma, the same name as the island of Likoma, is superior to the Northern Region. The island lies about 18 km from the mainland of Mozambique away. The two islands is 10 km away and the mainland of Malawi can be reached after 48 km, but with the nearest port in Malawi, Nkhata Bay is located 56 km away. Chizumulu is at its narrowest point just over 100 m wide, and in the longest dimension approximately 4.5 km above eck long. The approximately 3 km2 large island extends in a northerly direction, almost parallel to the sister island. As the highest peak on the island of Mount Chingohi (or Chingole ) is mentioned.

Population

Chizumulu currently probably around 3,000 inhabitants (2009 ). The population is made as to Likoma and from different ethnicities, but are different than on the neighboring island of Nkhata Bay, Mozambique and Tanzania. Tonga is the most spoken language in the school but also in religious gatherings and Nyanja is used. 99 percent of the population are Christians and belonged to the Church of England until 1980, mainly operating on the island of Likoma opened its first mission in 1903. Meanwhile, other churches are represented.

Food supply

Almost the entire population of the island lives from fishing. The boys start early from 14 years with it and learn very quickly from their fathers to feed the fish the family. Naturally, therefore, is also the pride of the men about their daily work. Up to 40,000 Kwacha, the owner of a network can earn on a good day's fishing. The fish is sold to fishmongers, in turn, bring the fish on the mainland in Malawi in the trade. Cassava, baobabs and mango supplement the food supply.

Infrastructure

The island can only be reached over the water. Twice a week, comes the stricken -looking steamer Ilala the Malawi Lake Services over, creates in the bay Mambala, supplies the island with all the necessities and transports passengers to and from Malawi and Tanzania. The island has a tiny non- asphalted road network. From the bay seed, from the narrowest point of the island, operate small boats to the neighboring island of Likoma.

Economy

Apart from fishing and by a very modest tourism, the island has no other revenue opportunities. Since the island is accessible only by boat and guests who would land by plane in Likoma, additionally would accept an arduous journey on a small boat, it is not expected that tourism still strong growth in the foreseeable future will.
