Choctaw County (Oklahoma)

The Choctaw County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. In the census in 2010, the County had 15,205 inhabitants and a population density of 7.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hugo, which was named after the French poet Victor Hugo.

History

The Choctaw County was formed on 16 July 1907 as the original County of Choctaw country. It was named after the North American Indian people of the Choctaw.

Already in 1821 there were in this area a trading post in 1854 and a military post was established. In the former administration building of the Choctaw, the last Confederate general was captured after the American Civil War. Near the old military post built in 1832 to a two-story log house, the oldest still existing building Oklahoma - the Old Chiefs House - for the then Distrikleiter Thomas Le Flore, after whom the Le Flore County was named.
