Choibalsan (city)

Choibalsan (Mongolian Чойбалсан ) is the capital of Dornod aimag in Mongolia, and the fourth largest city in the country. By 1941 the city was named Bayan Tumen ( Баян Тумэн ), then it was renamed in honor of the communist leader Chorloogiin Choibalsan. It lies on the River Cherlen at an altitude of 747 m asl

History

The site was for centuries a stopping place for caravans. In the nineteenth century, it developed into a town, and in the twentieth century by the economic center of eastern Mongolia. When, after the democratization withdrew the Russian workers, brought great parts of the economy together. Since then, the city has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.

Population

Choibalsan is mainly occupied by Khalkha Mongolan, as well as smaller amounts of Buryat, Barga and Uzemchin. There are also a minority of immigrants from Inner Mongolia in China.

Traffic

The airport of Choibalsan ( COQ / zmcd ) has a fixed runway and is served by regular flights from and to Ulan Bator.
