Choiseul (Haute-Marne)

Choiseul is a commune with 96 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haute -Marne, in the Champagne -Ardenne region; it belongs to the district Chaumont and Canton Clefmont. The town is located 40 km east of Chaumont.

History

Choiseul is the origin of the Choiseul family, who acquired the title of Duke of Choiseul and the Duke of Praslin in the Ancien Régime. The location on the border of France to the Empire gave Choiseul, but especially his castle on the hill dominating the Bassigny Saint -Nicolas strategic importance. The castle was razed in 1573, after there Huguenots had fled. 1665 Choiseul was elevated to a duchy and peerage.
