Chokher Bali ( Bengali: চোখের বালি cokher Bali); ( literal translation grains of sand in the eye) is a Bengali film directed by Rituparno Ghosh, occupied with Aishwarya Rai in the lead role. The film is based on Rabindranath Tagore's novel of the same name. The film was dubbed in Hindi, marketed internationally in this language and shown at several film festivals including the International Film Festival of Locarno, at the Chicago International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. The original version takes 167 minutes, the German version is shortened to 120 minutes. At the box office it became a hit.

Action

Bengal 1902: The young widow Binodini, exceptionally educated, modern woman is, in the house of the rich Rajlakshmi, also a widow, was added. Their son Mahendra has married the young and naive Ashalata recently and lives in the same house. Between the dissimilar women Binodini and Ashalata a close friendship ensues, and they give themselves the affectionate nickname " Chokher Bali " ( grains of sand in the eye).

Mahendra Behari stepbrother, who is of marriageable age and a woman, develops a fondness for Binodini. But their social status as a widow does not allow a marriage. Instead, they maintain a spiritual and intellectual friendship. While Behari fights for political independence from England, located Binodini uses against all tradition for freedom and the rights of widows.

But Mahendra feels from the strong Binodini tightened, and the two begin an affair. As Ashalata finds love letters from Binodini and Mahendra, breaks for them a world together, and she leaves her husband, although she is already pregnant. Also Binodini, and finally Mahendra leave the house. They all meet up again in Benares, where Mahendra and Ashalata get back together. Behari Binodini makes a marriage proposal, but she disappears.
