Choking#Abdominal thrusts

The Heimlich maneuver, also called Heimlich maneuver, is a life-saving measure in case of imminent suffocation or Bolustod due to a complete airway obstruction by a foreign body (swallowing). It has been described by its inventor, the American doctor Henry J. Heimlich, in 1974. By compression of the abdomen ( abdominal cavity ), it is attempted to convey the foreign body through the resulting excess pressure from the respiratory tract. As a preliminary measure, a solution of the foreign body should be tried by sharp blows between the shoulder blades.

Application

The arms of the helper include it from behind the upper abdomen of the patient. The helper makes a fist with one hand and places it below the ribs and the sternum. With the other hand he grabs his fist and then pulls her jerky strong straight back to his body. The objective is to promote the increase in pressure in the lungs to the foreign matter from the air tube. If required, the maneuver to be carried out up to five times. After each implementation should be checked if the foreign body has been solved. The chest itself should not be compressed.

When applying the Heimlich maneuver is a risk of internal injuries in the patient ( ruptured spleen, ruptured liver in children; burst aneurysms in the elderly). The risks are taken, however, due to the acute danger of death by suffocation or reflex cardiac arrest due to vagal stimulation in purchasing. After applying the Heimlich handle the patient should be taken to a hospital to treat any injuries.

In children less than one year, however, should be avoided by the application. Instead, you compress the chest as in the revival with two fingers.

Contraindications

  • In a fishbone eg the principle hardly works because they do not completely closes the airway and therefore the pressure on her past escapes without moving them.
  • Drowning: Experiments with the Heimlich maneuver to remove water from the lungs, should be absolutely prohibited.
  • The Heimlich maneuver is not performed at already occurred unconsciousness. Here is immediately started cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • The Heimlich maneuver should not be used in infants ( age <1 year ) because the risk of injury is too high.
