Chondrinidae

Western oat grain auger ( Chondrina avenacea )

The grain auger ( Chondrinidae ) are a family of snails from the subordination of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). The family includes about 60 species that occur in the Western Palearctic in essence.

Features

The housings are hochkonisch and slightly fusiform. They are about 5 to 10 mm high. The mouth is usually handled wide, in the mouth usually extend beyond 10 teeth and folds into it. The outside is smooth or finely ribbed. They are usually dark brown or horn color. In hermaphroditic genital apparatus with a penis epiphallus is formed. The inner wall of the penis is folded internally. The boundary between the penis and epiphallus is marked by a blind pouch ( cecum ); However, this may not be filled. The Penisretraktor is applied below the middle of the penis. The epiphallus gradually changes into the vas deferens ( vas deferens ).

Occurrence and life

The family is predominantly in Southwest Asia, widespread in southern Europe and North Africa. The Old World occurrence extends north up into Central Europe, east to the Kopet Dag ( in the border region of Turkmenistan and Iran ), in the southeast to the Arabian Peninsula. The westernmost natural resources are in the Canary Islands. The animals live on rocks and feed by grazing on endolithic lichens. For this, the surface of the rock (including lichens) is rasped with the help of the radula.

System

The grain auger ( Chondrinidae ) by Bouchet & Rocroi family is (2005) one of 13 families of the superfamily Pupilloidea. Schileyko (1998 ) provide contrast in a superfamily Chondrinoidea to which it provides in addition to the Chondrinidae the pyramid snails ( Pyramidulidae ). The division of the family into two subfamilies and six genera is based on Kokshoorn (2008). Schileyko (1998) uses a different classification at genus level ( Granopupa as a subgenus of Chondrina, Rupestrella as a synonym to it), but this was not generally accepted, and is not supported by the investigations of Kokshoorn. Other genera ( eg Fauxulus, Odontocyclas ), which are provided by Schileyko (1998) to the Chondrinidae include, in the opinion of most malacologists in the Orculidae family.
