The University Chonnam ( English: Chonnam National University ) is a public university in South Korea. The main campus is located in Yongbong -dong, Buk- gu, Gwangju.

The name Chonnam (also Jeonnam, 전남 ) is the short form of Jeollanam -do ( 전라 남도 ).

History

The university was founded in January 1952 with five colleges ( faculties):

  • Engineering ( re-established ),
  • Agricultural Science (predecessor: Provincial Agricultural University Gwangju, founded in 1909 ),
  • Liberal Arts and Sciences (predecessor: private Daeseong College, founded in 1951 ),
  • Commercial Science (predecessor: Provincial Graduate School of Mokpo, founded in 1920 ), and
  • Medicine (predecessor: Provincial Medical School Gwangju, founded in 1944 ).

In May 1954 she became the terrain for today's Yongbong campus, and in the few years covered by the colleges in the new campus. In April 1958, the College of Commercial Science from Mokpo to Gwangju moved.

There were students of Chonnam University, against the closures of the universities in the country, against the military dictatorship, against the imposed martial law and for the release of Kim demonstrated May 18, 1980 Dae -jung and after the escalation with the police and military unit the lead in the popular uprising of Gwangju took over. A lot of students lost their lives after the nine-day uprising was brutally crushed by the military. In memory of the events, the May 18 Memorial Hall was inaugurated on 18 May 2005 on the university campus.

In March 2006, the University was Yeosu (English Yosu National University, founded in 1917 ) merged to form Chonnam University.
