Chonos Archipelago

The Chonos Archipelago (Spanish Archipelago de los Chonos ) is an island group in the south of Chile in the Región de Aysen.

Geography

The Chonos Archipelago begins around 100 kilometers south of the big island of Chiloe and ends in the Taitao Peninsula. The archipelago consists of hundreds of islands, some of which have a considerable size (eg Isla Melchor and Isla Benjamín ).

The channels Canal Moraleda and Estero Elefante separate the archipelago from the mainland.

The archipelago is named after the extinct people of the Chonos.

Attractions

Some islands have large glaciers, such as the National Park Laguna San Rafael. These are often visited by Puerto Aysen and Puerto Chacabuco by ship. In the center of the archipelago, the nature reserve Las Guaitecas is. Here the climate is rough and very rainy.

Far out in the Pacific Ocean, the island lies Guamblin with the National Park Isla Guamblin. The island lies about 90 kilometers northeast of Puerto Aguirre. The National Park covers about 106 km ². Here often blue whales can be observed.

In the north of the Chonos Archipelago is the place Melinka, he has a small airport.

Except Melinka and Puerto Aguirre, the archipelago is virtually uninhabited.
