Chontal Maya ( Yokot t'an ) is an indigenous language in the state of Tabasco in Mexico with about 37000-45000 speakers.
Name
The name " Chontal " comes from Nahuatl and means " foreign". It is also used for two other unrelated languages in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Guerrero are so rise to confusion. The proper name Yokot t'an means " true language ".
Classification
Chontal Maya is one of the Mayan languages and is closely related to the Chol language.
Dissemination
The language is spoken according to the census of 2010 of 37 091 people in the Mexican state of Tabasco in the municipios Centla, Centro, Jalpa, Macuspana and Nacajuca.
