Chontal

Chontal ( Nahuatl chontalli, "foreign" ) is a name of the Nahua peoples of Mexico for various indigenous who do not speak Nahuatl, as well as their languages:

  • Chontal Maya ( Tabasco ), self- designation Yokot'anob [ Pl ] or Yokot'an [ sg ] ( "Speaker of the true language" ) Chontal Maya language, self-description Yokot t'an ( " true language " )

Similarly, the term " Chontal " was also used by the nahuasprachigen Nicarao for hostile neighboring ethnic groups in Nicaragua, to which also the name of the local department of Chontales back.
