The Choptank River is an important tributary of the Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of the United States. The river rises in Kent County, Delaware, and then runs through the state of Maryland. The river runs north of the Nanticoke River.

The catchment area of ​​the Choptank River comprises around 2,600 km ². About 580 km ² of which are open water areas. 48 percent of the dehydrated from the Choptank River area is used for agriculture.

The course of the Choptank has also been used by the slavery opponent and member of the so-called Underground Railroad Harriet Tubman as she led escaped slaves from Maryland to Pennsylvania and Canada.
