The α - subunit of the glycoprotein hormones (CGA ), the four peptides, LH, FSH, TSH and CG common 92 amino acid long protein subunit. It combines each dealing with one of the four beta- subunits to the corresponding peptide hormone.

Originally from the English-speaking designation glycoprotein hormones for these four peptides is somewhat unfortunate, since, for example, erythropoietin ( EPO) is a glycoprotein and simultaneously a hormone, but not one of this protein family.

Biosynthesis

CGA is generated in those tissues where the appropriate hormone is required. The gene is located on chromosome 6 for CGA and comprises four exons and 9,610 base pairs. The transcript is of a length of 710 bases and the final peptide is 92 amino acids long.
