Chornobai

Tschornobaj (Ukrainian Чорнобай; Russian Чернобай / Tschernobai ) is an urban-type settlement in the northeast of the oblast Cherkassy in Ukraine with about 7,600 inhabitants ( 2013).

Geography

Tschornobaj located 50 km north-east of Cherkassy on the river RKLj, a small tributary of the Dnieper. The nearest railway station is located in the city Zolotonosha 22 km west of the village. The settlement council community heard next Tschornobaj the village Sawkiwka (Ukrainian Савківка ) with about 330 inhabitants.

History

The settlement was founded in the mid 17th century by Cossacks. In 1656 the village was first mentioned in 1923 and the place was Rajonzentrum. Tschornobaj was occupied on 19 September 1941 to 27 September 1943 by troops of the Wehrmacht. On April 23, 1965 Tschornobaj received the status of an urban-type settlement.

Rajon

Tschornobaj is the administrative seat of the founded in 1923, the same Rajons. It forms a peninsula in its south in the dammed reservoir to Krementschuker Dnepr. The Rajon Tschornobaj has nearly 50,000 inhabitants and an area of 1554 km ². The population density is 32 inhabitants per km ².
