Name declaration

How did it come to racial designation Chow, can no longer be determined. A guess is the corruption of the Chinese " Gou ", pronounced " Kou " or " chewing ", which simply means dog. Another assumption is towards Pidgin English, a mixed language from English, Portuguese, Chinese and Malay words, a sort of trade language: Chow - chow would therefore mean treat. Chow - chow is also the name for Ginger, who was traded by Chinese and therefore called Chow - chow. This nickname was then adopted for the dog.
