Chris Argyris

Chris Argyris (* July 16, 1923 in Newark, New Jersey, † November 16, 2013 ) was a professor of management science at Yale and co-founder of organization development.

Curriculum vitae

After his military service, he studied psychology and economics. He received his Ph.D. at Cornell University, with a thesis on the behavior in organizations. From 1951 to 1971 he has been Professor of Administrative Sciences at Yale University. Later he was a professor of education and organizational behavior at Harvard University. Today ( 2007), he is still active as director of the consulting firm Monitor.

Argyris applies in addition to Dick Beckhard, Edgar Schein and Warren Bennis as co-founder of organization development. He dealt with the question of how an organization influences the development of their staff, and to what extent it depends on their quality. He moved so that the interpersonal relationships in the workplace at the center of attention. From this, the term was coined a "learning organization " Argyris is also famous for its central management concepts of " rehearsed incompetence " and the " defensive routines " ( Argyris, in: Fatzer 1996)..
