Chris Irwin

Chris Irwin (* June 27, 1942 in London ) is a British former Formula 1 driver.

The first time on July 16, 1966 in Formula 1, he missed the Grand Prix of Great Britain in a Brabham BT11 - Repco with the seventh rank just under the first championship points. On September 25th of that year came Irwin, as a replacement driver for Denis Hulme in the Formula 2 Brabham BT18 - Honda for the first use in the French Albi, where he drove to 3rd place. 1967 signed him the British privateer team Reg Parnell Racing Grand Prix of the Netherlands, where he replaced Piers Courage. However, he drove in unreliable BRM chassis only four of nine races to an end. His best and at the same time the only end result in the points was the fifth place in the Grand Prix of France 1967.

After his short Formula 1 career, Irwin won in 1968 in a Formula 2 car, the Eifel race on the South Loop of the Nürburgring. Irwin on Lola -Cosworth drove the 30 laps or 232.410 kilometers in 1:25,09,8 hours; Second, at 25.4 seconds behind Kurt Ahrens Jr.

On May 17, 1968 Irwin was killed during practice for the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring in the track section airfield with his Ford P68, which he shared with Pedro Rodríguez, difficult. After a bump in the car received under air, lifted sharply and overturned. The driver suffered severe head injuries. The fact that the car had a then cutting-edge, riveted aluminum monocoque, probably saved his life. After this serious accident, Irwin pulled back completely from motorsport.

Today Irwin lives secluded in the English Rutland.
