Chris Kelsey

Chris Kelsey ( born June 5, 1961 in Bangor ( Maine) ) is an American soprano saxophonist and composer of the Modern Creative Jazz and free improvisation music and music journalist.

Life

Chris Kelsey's father was a saxophonist and music teacher, his mother a librarian. He grew up in Oklahoma and studied music education at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Oklahoma, where he completed his studies with the Bachelor. During this time he played in various R & B, rock and jazz bands around Oklahoma City. In the early 1990s he moved to New York City and worked on a number of albums in the stylistic breadth of post-bop to free improvisation with which are especially created for the CIMP label and Knitting Factory; so he can be heard on recordings by Steve Swell ( Observations, 1996) or Lou Grassi. Since the early 1990s he also took under his own name, a number of albums for the avant-garde label CIMP and Cadence Jazz Records, on which musicians like Joe McPhee, Francois Grillot, Ken Filiano, Dominic Duval, David Hofstra, Jackson Krell, Jay Rosen, Grassi and Swell participated. He also began his musical activities in addition to a second career as a music journalist and critic; He writes for a variety of publications, such as a u for Cadence Jazz Magazine, Jazziz and Jazz Times as well as for the All Music Guide.
