Chris Welp

Christian Ansgar Welp ( born January 2, 1964 in Delmenhorst ) is a former German national basketball player and coach.

He began 1974 in Osnabrück with the sport of basketball, coached and played as a teenager, first at the local Post SV and then moved to the A- youth team of the BC Giants. His first club in the German Bundesliga, 1982-1983, was then the BC Giants Osnabrück. In 1983 he went to the U.S., at the University of Washington, where he played together with, inter alia, Detlef Schrempf for the " Huskies ". Due to an outstanding college career as a center, he was regarded as a very talented " fives ". 1987 drafteten him the Philadelphia 76ers ranked 16th. In the NBA he played from 1987 to 1990, for the Philadelphia 76ers, then for the San Antonio Spurs (1989 to 1990) and most recently for the Golden State Warriors in Oakland ( California).

Then he played, returned to Europe in 1991, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Olympiakos Piraeus ( Greece), for Alba Berlin and last until 1999, for Viola Reggio Calabria ( Italy). Chris Welp won a total of six times, in the years 1991 to 1996 and 1998, the German Basketball Championship, it was 1991, 1993 and 1995 Cup Winners' Cup in 1997 and won the Euroleague with Olympiakos Piraeus.

For the " legend" was the 2.13 m wide Center on July 4, 1993 in Munich, when he, the subsequent free throw scored in European Championship final against Russia, tying the score at 68:70, despite the challenge, with a dunk and Germany so surprisingly led to the European Championship. He was then selected as " Player of the Tournament ".

Chris Welp until 2006 was assistant coach of the German national team and now lives in Seattle (USA).
