Chris White (bassist)

Chris White ( born July 6, 1936 in New York City ) is an American jazz bassist.

White appeared in the 1950s, occasionally with Cecil Taylor. 1960 to 1961 he accompanied the singer Nina Simone. After that, he was a member until 1966 the band of Dizzy Gillespie. In 1963, he played a recording with saxophonist James Moody Gillespie. Later, he led his own band, The Jazz Survivors and was a member of the group Prism. He also worked with, among others, Billy Taylor, Eubie Blake, Earl Hines, Chick Corea, Teddy Wilson, Kenny Barron, Mary Lou Williams, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Billy Cobham. In 1976, he appeared at the wildflowers with loft sessions.

In 1992 his album The Chris White Project ( with Cecil Brooks III, Jimmy Ponder, Cassandra Wilson, Grachan Moncur III, Steve Nelson, Keith Copeland, Marvin Horne, Steve Kroon, Michael Raye ). White was the first director of the New York Jazz Mobile project, the first director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University and teaches at Bloomfield College in New Jersey.
