Christian August Brandis

Christian August Brandis ( born February 13, 1790 in Minden wood; † July 21, 1867 in Bonn) was a philosopher and Prussian legation secretary.

Life

His father was the physician and pharmacist Joachim Dietrich Brandis. After attending schools in Minden wood and Kiel studied in 1808 at the University of Kiel first theology, then philology and philosophy. After receiving his doctorate in 1813 he was a lecturer in philosophy in Copenhagen. 1818 he was appointed Privatdozent in Berlin, where he has been appointed in the same year professor. Three years later, in 1821, he moved to the University of Bonn. In 1826 he settled on the banks of the Rhine before the town on the so-called " Mr. Wall," which is now southeastern part of the city park, a villa built (1905 aborted).

1836, the Ministry Brandis free for his job in Greece, so that he, in 1837, when Cabinet for two years entered the service of the Greek King Otto I the following year. After his release in 1839 he returned to Bonn.

Brandis earned a reputation as a historian of philosophy, who was one of the first in the tradition of hermeneutics Friedrich Schleiermacher. His legacy is preserved in the municipal archives of Bonn.
