Christian August Lorentzen

Christian August Lorentzen ( born August 10, 1749 Sønderborg, † May 8, 1828 in Copenhagen) was a Danish painter.

Life

Lorentzen was the son of a watchmaker and studied around 1771 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He was a pupil of Johan Peder Als and almond mountain. In the period 1779-1782 study trips led him to the Netherlands, especially in Antwerp, and to France, where he made copies of Old Masters in Paris. For 1792 a Norway trip is documented.

Lorentzen painted in the period from 1801 to 1814, beginning with the Battle of Copenhagen, scenes from the wars between Denmark and England. Then he turned to portraiture. Besides created landscapes and paintings with scenes from the works of Danish writer Ludvig Holberg.

He became in 1803 a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art and until his death there significant impact on the next generation of Danish painter. 1809-1810 he was director of the Academy. His numerous works are exhibited in almost all Danish museums.

He was buried in the cemetery of the garrison church in Copenhagen.
