Christian August Vulpius

Christian August Vulpius also Anshelmo Mercello Thuring and Tirso de Milano ( born January 23, 1762, Weimar, † June 26, 1827 in Weimar ) was a German writer.

Life

Vulpius was the eldest child of the former princely Saxon Amtskopisten Johann Friedrich Vulpius and his wife Margaret, née Riehl. One of his sisters was later Christiane von Goethe.

His schooling completed Vulpius at the Weimar Wilhelm -Ernst -Gymnasium. Subsequently, he enrolled for a law degree at the University of Jena. He later moved with the same subject to Erlangen. From this time the first publications where it already partially advice was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on page originate.

With Goethe's support took in autumn 1789, the Georg Joachim Goschen Leipzig bookseller Vulpius ' to; he hired him as secretary. Later Vulpius worked as a librettist and arranger for Bellomo and Goethe at the theater in Weimar. In 1797 he obtained a permanent position as registrar of the library in Weimar; here was probably Goethe mediating role. In 1800 he was promoted to library secretary.

1801 married Helene Vulpius Deahna. With her he had two sons. Named his first son he " Rinaldo " .1803 awarded him the University of Jena, the title of Dr. phil. Two years later he was promoted to full librarian and in addition, the Board received a Münzinspektors. The title Grand Ducal Council was awarded to him in 1816. In the same year he was elected a knight of the white falcon North.

In 1824, after a stroke, Vulpius could work only in a very restricted. He had himself transferred to retire. After a second stroke in February 1827 he was bedridden. He died on June 26, 1827 in Weimar.

Vulpius's fame rests almost exclusively on his novel Rinaldo Rinaldine robber, the robber captain. This trivial novel hit exactly the taste of the audience and witnessed many editions and imitations. Vulpius wrote some sequels. 1927 Luciano Albertini played the main role in the first film adaptation of the novel, directed by Max Obal. In 1968, the eve of successful television series Rinaldo Rinaldine ( TV series) in the ARD with Fred Williams in the lead role.
