Christian Daniel Beck

Christian Daniel Beck ( born January 22, 1757 in Leipzig, † December 13, 1832 ) was a German philologist.

Life

Beck studied at the Leipzig Thomas School and studied at the University of Leipzig. Here he became Master in 1778, habilitation in 1779 and 1782 first extraordinary, but from 1785 professor of Greek and Latin literature. From 1819 to 1825 he exchanged his chair against the history. He was twelve times rector of the university.

In 1785 he founded the Philological Society in Leipzig. Since 1790 Beck was director of the University Library of Leipzig. From 1803 to 1818 was editor of the Leipziger Beck literature newspaper.

Beck had one son, Johann Ludwig Wilhelm Beck, who was a lawyer.
