Christian Edward Detmold

Christian Edward Detmold ( born February 2, 1810 in Hannover, † July 2, 1887 in New York City ) was a German - American engineer.

Detmold graduated from the Military Academy in Hanover in 1826 and came to New York. He wanted to be able to enter the Brazilian Army, but decided for the engineering career in the United States. 1833/34 he worked for the U.S. War Department and resulted in the temporary supervision in the construction of Fort Sumter. From 1845 to 1852 he worked in the iron industry and then in a senior engineer construction supervision for the construction of the New York Crystal Palace. After a few years of traveling in Europe, he became president of the New Jersey Zinc Company.

In advanced years Detmold lived mostly in Paris. He worked as an art collector and published in 1882 an English translation of the major writings of Niccolò Machiavelli in 4 volumes. In 1885 he returned to New York. His brother William Ludwig Detmold (1808-1894), was a renowned surgeon who introduced the orthopedic surgery in the United States.
