Christian Friedrich Schwan

Christian Friedrich Swan ( born December 12, 1733 in Prenzlau, † June 29, 1815 in Heidelberg) was a German publisher and bookseller.

Swan studied theology from 1751 to 1753 in Halle ( Saale) and Jena. 1758 he worked as a proofreader at the Academy in St. Petersburg. In 1762 he was Legal Assistant in the regiment of Prince George of Holstein -Gottorp, in the following year in the Prussian service. After living in Holland and Frankfurt in 1765 he married the daughter of Hofbuchhändlers Eßlinger from Mannheim and took over the bookstore.

The bookstore and the house swan became a cultural center of Mannheim, where figures such as Lessing, Goethe, Schubart, Lenz, Wieland, Herder and Sophie von La Roche wrong. 1765-1766 he published the Moral Wochenschrift The Invisible Man, from 1774 to 1779, the magazine The chalkboard. In 1778 he received the title of Hofkammerrates.

Swan had close relations with the Mannheim theater. He recommended that the Director of Dalberg Schiller's play The Robbers, whose theater version, he moved in 1782. Also Schiller following works Conspiracy Fiesco (1783 ) and Love and Intrigue (1784 ) first published by Swan. 1785 Schiller gave him the hand of his daughter Anna Margaretha ( 1766-1796 ) to; Swan politely declined.

1794 Swan left Mannheim because of the chaos of war after the French Revolution and then lived in Heilbronn, Stuttgart and finally in Heidelberg. 1764 published Shan in The Hague Anecdotes russes, which appeared the following year in German language in Frankfurt. A six-volume German - French and French - German dictionary published 1782-1798 in Mannheim. Furthermore, published swan pictures of all worldly and spiritual orders (Mannheim 1770) and pictures of those orders which have their own religious clothing (Mannheim 1791).
