Christian Gmelin

Christian Gottlob Gmelin ( born October 12, 1792 in Tübingen, † May 13, 1860 ibid ) was a professor of chemistry and pharmacy at the University of Tübingen.

Life and work

His father was Christian Gottlob Gmelin sen. (* 1749), his mother Friederike Charlotte, nee Haas ( * 1765 ). He was a cousin of Leopold Gmelin, Johann Gottlieb Friedrich von beans Berger was his father. Like his father, studied medicine and received Gmelin 1785 MD after completing his PhD at the University of Erlangen. In 1817 he was professor of chemistry and pharmacy at the University of Tübingen. On April 30, 1818, he married Luise Friederike Philippine beans Berger ( 1800-1884 ); they had six daughters and three sons. He has worked in the field of spectroscopy and discovered the red flame color of lithium. Further work on the synthesis of ultramarine followed. Gmelin mentioned evidence of boric acid using turmeric paper. The first three volumes of Berzelius ' "Annual Report " Gmelin translated into German.
