Christian Habicht (historian)

Christian Habicht ( born February 23, 1926 in Dortmund ) is a German historian and epigraphists.

After completing his PhD at the University of Hamburg in 1952, Habicht was there then assistant and after the Habilitation in 1957 Privatdozent. In 1961 he was appointed a full professor at the University of Marburg in 1965 and moved to the University of Heidelberg. A professor at the University of Basel ( 1970) he refused. 1973 went hawk as a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he served as a member since last year. In Heidelberg he remained an honorary professor. Until 1983, he also taught as a visiting professor at Princeton University. In 1998 he became Professor Emeritus. Perhaps his most important pupil, Alexander Demandt.

Habicht deals mainly with the Greek epigraphy and history of Athens in the Hellenistic period. In addition, he has also written studies of Pausanias and Cicero.

1982 hawk Sather was a professor in Classics at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1991 he received the Reuchlin Prize of the City of Pforzheim, 1996 Moe Prize of the American Philosophical Society, and in 1998 the Criticos Prize of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies in London. He is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences (since 1970 ), the German and the Austrian Archaeological Institute, the American Philosophical Society, the British Academy and the Academy of Athens. Habicht was co-editor of the series Hypomnemata ( 1962-1996 ) and the American Journal of Ancient History ( 1976-2000 ).
