Christian I, Elector of Saxony
Christian I ( born October 29, 1560 in Dresden, † September 25, 1591 ibid ) from the Albertine line of the Wettin was since 1586 Elector of Saxony.
Life
Christian was a son of the Elector Augustus of Saxony (1526-1586) from his marriage to Anna (1532-1585), daughter of King Christian III. of Denmark. After his older brother Alexander in 1565 the death of Crown Prince Christian was, he was the only survivor of his nine brothers his father. Christian was trained inter alia by Christian Schütz and early into government work of his father. After the death of his father and the takeover of the government in 1586 but Christian showed little interest in the affairs of state and gave himself up to pleasures, especially hunting and alcohol.
The dispute between Lutheran Orthodoxy and leaning against Philippism to Melanchthon, who had prevailed during the reign of his parents was contrary to Christian. Already in 1585 as co-regent with his father, he passed a law against the theologian bickering. The Formula of Concord led by his father, he refused. 1587 appointed Christian Johann Salmuth as court preacher in Dresden, who abolished the exorcism at baptism among others. Here, Christian counselor and influential Chancellor Nikolaus Krell was in charge, of the Saxons to the Calvinism approached, but without officially change the denomination. Domestically made Krell's influence itself felt in the curtailment of the powers of the Privy Council and of the estates in the government affairs. In foreign policy, Christian was dependent on his brother John Casimir of simmering. Christian could even convince them that his sister, Johann Casimir's wife Elizabeth, an assassination plot planned against her husband. With John Casimir Christian joined a Protestant defensive alliance and supported the Protestants in France. The command of an auxiliary army refused to Seconding Christian from though.
Under Christian the stable yard was built in Dresden and Königstein into a fortress.
The first survey of Electoral Saxony, the Electorate of Saxony first land survey by the Markscheider Matthias Oeder, which was begun in 1586 under his father, was continued under Christian's reign. After Oeders death in 1614 the work of Balthasar Zimmermann was continued until 1633 and was completed as far as possible.
Christian died after a prolonged gastric and intestinal distress only 30 years old during a hunt. The Elector was buried in Freiberg Cathedral.

On April 25, 1582 Christian married in Dresden Sophie ( 1568-1622 ), daughter of the Elector Johann Georg of Brandenburg, with whom he had the following children:
