Christian II, Elector of Saxony

Christian II ( born September 23, 1583 in Dresden, † June 23, 1611 ibid ) was from the Albertine line of the Wettin was Prince Elector of Saxony since 1591.

Life

Christian was the eldest son of the Elector Christian I of Saxony (1560-1591) from his marriage to Sophie (1568-1622), daughter of the Elector Johann Georg of Brandenburg. After the early death of his father, Christian, was still a minor, 1591 Elector of Saxony. His mother raised her son strict Lutheran and held him otherwise away from the business of government. On September 12, 1602 in Dresden Christian married Hedwig ( 1581-1641 ), daughter of King Frederick II of Denmark.

Christian was considered a man of vigorous physical appearance and good-natured character, but was intellectually hardly able to lead the affairs of state while totally dependent on consultants. The Elector went on in the hunt and his passion for food and drink. Due to its poor economic policies, the government debt were increasing significantly. He died childless, and at the age of 27 years after he overheated had drunk a large amount of cold beer, probably from a stroke. He was buried in Freiberg Cathedral. In the government was succeeded by his younger brother Johann Georg.
