Christian-Jaque

Christian - Jaque (* August 4, 1904 in Paris, France, † July 8, 1994 in Boulogne- Billancourt, France; actually Christian Maudet ) was a French film director.

Life and work

Christian - Jaque studied architecture in Paris, before he designed movie scenes for an American film company ( First National ). In between, he was even two years film journalist before 1927 to 1931 worked as a film decorator again. In 1932 he directed his first feature film L' Bidon d'Or. For The Pearls of the Crown from 1937, written and directed in collaboration with Sacha Guitry, he was awarded the prize for best screenplay at the Film Festival in Venice with Guitry. During the occupation, he turned also films ( for the German company Continental ), but also worked simultaneously for the French underground army FFI.

The elaborate costume films that he made in the 1950s, earned him the nickname of " French Cecil B. DeMille " one. For Fanfan, the hussar with Gérard Philipe in 1952, he received the Silver Bear in Berlin and the Director's Award of the Cannes Film Festival. For TKX unresponsive ( Si tous les gars du monde ) was awarded to him in 1956 in Karlovy Vary, the crystal globe. Christian - Jacque was from 1954 to 1959 his third wife ( after his divorce from actress Renée Faure ( 1919-2005 ), whom he married in 1947 and with whom he had a daughter ) married to the French actress Martine Carol, which he also films such as Lucrezia Borgia (1952 ), Madame Dubarry (1954 ), Nana (1954, by Émile Zola ), Natalie (1957) and Adorables créatures (1952, with Danielle Darrieux ) brought out.

After his divorce he wore in 1959 Babette Goes to War helping to launch the career of Brigitte Bardot, Martine Carole should replace as a French movie idol. Overall, he was married at least five times, most recently from 1992 with his assistant Denise Morlot. Other wives were the actresses Christiane Delyne and Simone Renant ( 1940-1944 ). From the 1970s he worked mainly for television, such as in the series L' Homme de Suez with Guy Marchand. He died at 89 of a heart attack and is at the Père Lachaise Cemetery buried.
