Christian Jouanin

Christian Jouanin (* July 10, 1925 in Paris, France ) is a French ornithologist and conservationist.

Life

At the age of 15 years Jouanin devoted to professional work with birds, when he was working under the guidance of Jacques Berlioz, the then head of the bird department, for the Muséum national d' histoire naturelle in Paris. At the age of 22 he married. From this marriage two daughters were born. Jouanin trained as a pharmacist, but moonlighted on for the museum. In 1952, he co-authored with Jean Dorst, the successor of Berlioz as head of the bird department, the first scientific description of juniper Francolin ( Francolinus ochropectus ), an endangered species of bird in Djibouti, the type specimen was sent by Colonel Edward Chédeville to the Museum in the same year. Furthermore Jouanin developed a lifelong interest in hummingbirds and petrels. In 1955 he published his first independent style description about the Jouanin Petrel ( Bulweria fallax ), after realizing that this taxon significantly from Maskarenensturmvogel ( Pseudobulweria aterrima ) differs. This description was followed by a long period devoted the Jouanin researching the petrels in the Indian Ocean. While it was his main goal is to find the Nistgründe of Maskarenensturmvogels, he discovered on the island of Réunion another Sturmvogelart, the Barausturmvogel ( Pterodroma baraui ). Next he studied the differences between the populations of the Audubonsturmtauchers ( Puffinus lherminieri ) in Réunion and the Seychelles.

1963 undertook Jouanin together with Francis Roux an expedition to the Selvagens. Then he ran with Alec Zino studies on the Cory's shearwater ( Calonectris diomedea ) in Madeira, a collaboration that culminated in 80 joint scientific articles.

In 1979, he co-wrote with Jean -Louis Mougin the section on Procellariiformes ( Procellariiformes ) in standard reference check -list of Birds of the World by James Lee Peters. From 1970 to 1975 he was Vice President of IUCN. In 1954 he was a member of the International Ornithological Congress, where he served from 1970 to 1978 on the board.

2005 had Jouanin in the French film documentary Le Château de Malmaison with Napoleon's residence Malmaison Castle.
