Christian Lautenschlager

Life

After an apprenticeship and several years of wandering Lautenschlager 1899 set as a mechanic by Gottlieb Daimler in vehicle of the Daimler -Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG ) in Cannstatt. Since 1905 he was responsible for inspections and Einfahrarbeiten as champions in the driving department and received by the opportunity to actively participate in motor sport. As the Daimler car 1906/ 07 sections with little success in automobile racing, Lautenschlager was admitted as a racer in the DMG team. His surprising victory in the French Grand Prix in 1908 moved the DMG again closer to the center of public interest. Sales of Mercedes cars has tripled to 1912. On 4 July 1914, shortly before the outbreak of World War II, he managed another win at the Grand Prix of France, who was this time held in Lyon. With this victory, Lautenschlager reached the peak of his career, and established the worldwide reputation of Mercedes.

After the First World War, the Grand Prix motor racing in Europe came to a halt for the time being. Lautenschlager started then at the Targa Florio and occupied in 1922 and 1924 respectively the 10th Place. In 1923 he drove in the 500 miles of Indianapolis in the United States in one of three Mercedes race cars, but retired due to an accident from. In 1925, he drove his last race in Palermo.

After further victories forthcoming, he ended his racing career. Until his retirement in 1936 he continued to work at Daimler -Benz in Stuttgart as trial champion. He died 76 years old in Fellbach. His grave is in the churchyard in Stuttgart -Wangen.
