Christian Ludwig Boxberg

Christian Ludwig Boxberg ( born April 24, 1670 in Special Hausen, † December 1, 1729 in Görlitz ) was a German composer and organist.

Boxberg attended the Thomas School and the University of Leipzig. In 1692 he became organist in Great grove, but also acted as a singer, librettist and opera composer. Between 1694 and 1700 several operas were performed by him in Leipzig, Wolfenbüttel, Kassel and Ansbach. His only surviving opera is of Sardanapalus, which he wrote for the Ansbach court as a guest performance of the Leipzig Opera in 1698 and thus get in the library remained. 1702 he moved to the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Görlitz. From this point on, he turned to the church music. In 1704 he published a description of where the solar organ of Eugenio Casparini.

In his stage works he tried in succession to Nicholas Adam Strungk the creation of a German national opera in his home, but his works clearly show Italian and especially Venetian influences, which is probably due to Strungks experiences in Italy.
