Christian Marclay

Christian Marclay ( b. 1955 in San Rafael, California) is an American visual artist and composer.

Life and work

The parents of Christian Marclay are Swiss, he grew up in Geneva and studied from 1975 Visual Arts at the Ecole Supérieur d'Art Visuel in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1977 he moved to the U.S. and studied sculpture at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. Originally inspired by Fluxus, Marclay explores with his works, the common pattern of sound, photography, video and film art. In 1979 he founded with guitarist Kurt Henry the performance group " The Bachelors, even " and realized his first pieces with records and turntables. He also developed monumental sculptural works such as Endless Column ( 1988) and drum kit (1999).

For his performances, he used vinyl records and other recorded music, which he manipulated, deformed or even destroyed to achieve sound effects such as infinite loops. Marclay says of himself that he generally prefers inexpensive used records from second hand stores.

He has worked with artists and musicians such as John Zorn, Butch Morris, Shelley Hirsch, William Hooker, Otomo Yoshihide and Okkyung Lee, Günter Müller, Flo Kaufmann and CCMC. In 2009 he won the Prix Meret Oppenheim.

At the opening of the 54th Biennale di Venezia 4 June 2011 he received the Golden Lion for best artist for his work The Clock (2010). "Record without a Cover " was included in the list Wire The Wire 's " 100 Records That Set The World On Fire (While No One Was Listening ) ". For the Clock, he received the 2011 Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Editing.

He lives in New York and London since 1980.
