Christian Scriver

Christian Scriver ( born January 2, 1629 in Rendsburg, † April 5, 1693 in Quedlinburg ) was a German theologian, inspector of timber circle in calbe / Saale and hymns poet.

Life and work

Scriver attended from 1645 to 1647 the Katharineum to Lübeck and then studied at the University of Rostock. There was Scriver 1651 doctoral thesis master. Subsequently, he was a tutor and pastor in Stendal and Magdeburg. In 1690 was Scriver court preacher in Quedlinburg.

As a devotional and popular writer he exercised on his contemporaries and posterity a great influence. He became a forerunner of pietism through his criticism of the abuses and externals of the Lutheran Church. Scrivers glory and blessedness of God's children learned numerous editions in the processing of his son Johann Heinrich Haevecker and was built in 1730 and 1864 re-issued even after the death of both. Scrivers souls treasure, a collection of his sermons as a preacher of Magdeburg week at the St. Jakobi Church of Magdeburg, saw the 12th edition of 1744. Christian Scriver is the librettist of the hymn The love sun light and splendor (EC 479).

His tomb was located in the St. Jakobi Church. After the demolition of the church was erected in the cloister of Wallonerkirche.
