Christian von Steven

Christian Steven (Russian Христиан Христианович Стевен / Christian Christianovich Stewen, scientific transliteration Christian Christianovič Steven; * 19.jul / January 30 1781greg in Fredrikshamn / Finland, .. † 18.jul / April 30 1863greg in Simferopol.. ) was a Russian botanist and entomologist Swedish origin. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Steven ".

Life and work

Steven graduated 1799, the medical-surgical faculty of the St. Petersburg Academy and then worked in a silk worm breeding operation in the Caucasus, where he rose to become assistant to the inspector ( 1806). In 1812 he was instrumental in the founding of the Botanical Garden Nikita in the Crimea, which he headed until 1824 as a director. He has at times been chancellor of the University of Moscow. In southern Russia, he was from 1826 to 1851 as Head of sericulture.

Ehrentaxa

The plant genera Stevenia from the family of cruciferous plants (Brassicaceae ) and Steveniella from the orchid family (Orchidaceae) are named after him. Furthermore, the specific epithet of Paeonia steveniana Kemularia - Nathadse (syn. Paeonia wittmanniana var nudicarpa ) voted for him.
