Parallel to his work as a preacher Wurstisen pursued an academic career: 1564-1584 he was a professor of mathematics at the University of Basel, 1585-1586 Professor of Theology. 1577-1578 and 1583-1585, he held the post of rector. 1586 Wurstisen left the university and became a city clerk, a post which he held until the end of life. As librarian of the University put Wurstisen to the second catalog. As town clerk, he was concerned that systematically council meetings were held in Basel for the first time. At the same operation Wurstisen historical studies. In 1580 he published the Basel Chronicle, the first overall presentation of the history of Basel, which also - now partly lost - records and inscriptions are integrated. 1585 Wurstisen edited a collection of sources on medieval history of the Holy Roman Empire ( " Germaniae historicorum Illustrium "). As a scientist, he was among the early supporters of the heliocentric theory of Copernicus, whose De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium was printed in 1566 in Basel. Wurstisen probably Galileo Galilei first became acquainted with this work, although Galileo's acceptance of heliocentrism was often attributed to Michael Maestlin.
