Christiana Figueres

Karen Christiana Figueres Olsen ( born August 7, 1956 in San José ) is a Costa Rican politician and, since July 1, 2010 Secretary General of the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Figueres ' father, Jose Figueres Ferrer, was in the 1940s to 1970s, three times president of Costa Rica.

Life

Figueres began her career at the Embassy of Costa Rica in Bonn as Minister-Counselor, where she worked from 1982 to 1985. For their use in the realignment of cooperation and development assistance between Germany and Costa Rica, she received the Grand Cross of the Federal Order of Merit. In 1987 she returned to Costa Rica, where she was Director of International Cooperation in the Ministry of Planning. In 1988, she was chief of staff in the Ministry of Agriculture.

After a pause, she was professional in 1994 Director of the Technical Secretariat of the Renewable Energy in the Americas ( REIA ), and sat there for the promotion of renewable energy and overcoming barriers to their use. In 1995 she was appointed director of the Center for Sustainable Development in the Americas ( CSDA ), which promotes the participation of Latin American countries in the UNFCCC. It held since 1995 Costa Rica in the international climate negotiations.

Following the resignation of the Secretary of the UNFCCC Yvo de Boer on 1 July 2010 entered Figueres to his successors.
