Christiane Brunner

Christiane Brunner ( born March 23, 1947 in Geneva, home justified in Egg ) is a Swiss politician (SP).

Life

1969 Christiane Brunner was a founding member of the women's liberation movement. 1976 to 1978 she worked as a lawyer in the Federal Social Insurance Office, 1980-1989 in a law firm in Geneva.

From 1981 to 1990, a member of the Geneva Cantonal Brunner, 1982-1989 President of the Swiss Association of Public Service ( VPOD ), 1983-1987 President of the Social Policy Commission of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland.

Union Brunner was 1992-2000 President of the SMUV, 1994-1998 additional co-president of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions.

1991 Brunner was elected to the National Council, where she was a member of the Commission for Social Security and Health and the Commission for Economic Affairs and Taxation.

The Federal Council elections on 3 March 1993 Brunner should stand as a candidate of the Social Democratic Party, the successor of René Felber in the Bundesrat. However, the bourgeois parliamentary majority instead chose their party comrades Francis Matthey, which led to significant protests - especially by women. Matthey abandoned in the wake of the adoption of choice. For re- election on March 10, the SP presented with Christiane Brunner and Ruth Dreifuss then two candidates - was chosen finally in the third ballot latter (see also: Brunner- effect).

In the 1995 election, the former National Councillor Brunner was selected for the Canton of Geneva in the Senate - that it belonged to until 2007, when they did not run in the election. She took a seat on the Law Commission, the Commission for Social Security and Health and the Commission for foreign policy and as of 1999 the Political Commission.

During a deep internal party crisis after the departure of Ursula Koch Christiane Brunner was elected in October 2000 to its successor as SP- party president and led the party to March 2004.
