Christianity in Eritrea

Approximately 49 % of the population of Eritrea belong to a Christian church. Most of this is part of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It was before the independence of Eritrea part of the Coptic Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

Confessions

In 1998, the Archbishop of Asmara Eritrean Patriarch of the new church. The Ethiopian Catholic Church has dioceses in Asmara, Keren and Barentu.

Since 2002, the Lutheran Church, the Roman Catholic Church and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church - in the country are officially represented. There are 91 232 Protestants in Eritrea ( 2% of the population). The Kale Hiywot Church of Eritrea is a smaller church.

There are about 150,000 Catholics in three eparchies.

Tracking

The Seventh- day Adventist Church is banned in Eritrea.

The State Department of the United States said in its report on religious freedom 2006 that Eritrea is a country of particular concern. There was repression against Christians exercising their religion outside the recognized churches: They were sent to prison for years, there was torture.
