Christianity in Libya

Christianity is a small religious minority in Libya.

The relations between Christians and Muslims in Libya are relatively peaceful. In the Muslim-majority country, it is, however, forbidden to proselytize Muslims. A Christian man must be Muslim if he wants to marry a Muslim woman. Conversely, a Muslim man to marry a Christian or Jewish woman without having to convert. Christian literature is limited.

Confessions

According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, the largest Christian group is Roman Catholicism, followed by Russian Orthodox Church and the Serbian Orthodox Christians. In Tripoli, there is an Anglican church that belongs to the Anglican Diocese of Egypt - Cairo. There are Coptic Orthodox and Greek Orthodox priest in Libya. The majority of Christians in Libya consists of Copts from Egypt.

Catholic Church

Approximately 40,000 Roman Catholic people live in Libya. There are two bishops in Libya, one in Tripoli for the Italians and one in Benghazi for the Maltese. There are Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate in Benghazi, Darna and Tripoli. There is an Apostolic Prefecture in Misrata. In Libya, there are two Catholic churches, one in Tripoli and Benghazi.
