Christine Edzard

Christine Edzard, married Christine Goodwin (born 15 February 1945 Paris ) is a French film director, screenwriter and costume designer.

Life and work

Christine Edzard is the daughter of the painter Dietz Edzard and his second wife Suzanne Eisendieck. She stood as a child multiple model for their parents. So painted Eisendieck 1947, a portrait of her, which was acquired by Robert Lehman, art collector and long-time managing director of Lehman Brothers. From Dietz Edzard come pictures of Christine au Bassin des Tuileries and Christine à l' Opéra, which they show as a young girl in front of a fountain or at the opera.

Edzard first studied economics. Then she turned to the theater and was among other things a student of Italian costume and stage designer Lila De Nobili ( 1916-2002 ). Her professional career began in 1968 when she designed the sets for Franco Zeffirelli film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet in Rome. Here she met her future husband, the British film producer Richard B. Goodwin ( b. 1934 ). Subsequently, she was involved in several theater and opera productions in Europe.

Edzard wrote with Goodwin the screenplay for Trixis Wonderland ( 1971), a ballet film after children's stories by Beatrix Potter. She also designed the costumes and the production design for the film, which earned her two nominations for BAFTA Awards.

Founded in 1975 Edzard and her husband, the production company sand film in London. Besides the production of films Edzards sand film is mainly specializing in manufacturing and costume hire service for film, television, theater and opera.

In 1977, Edzard the short film The Little Match Girl debut as a director. He appeared two years later, along with two other films ( The Kitchen, Little Ida ) under the title Stories from a Flying Trunk commercially. These were adaptations of stories by Hans Christian Andersen, with Edzard addition to directing, also wrote the screenplay. The Nightingale, another short Andersen adaptation, containing animated sequences and released in 1981. Biddy followed in 1983 with their first full-length feature film. It is about a Victorian nanny.

The real breakthrough came in 1988 with the Edzard Charles Dickens adaptation Little Dorrit. The two-part film ( Little Dorrit I: No one is to blame and Little Dorrit II: The story of little Dorrit ) was produced by sand film, Edzard directed and wrote the screenplay. The main characters were Joan Greenwood and Derek Jacobi and Alec Guinness in an award-winning supporting role. Edzard has won several awards for adapted screenplay, including an Oscar nomination.

Edzards next film, The Fool (1990 ), is based on the writings of Henry Mayhew, and shows Derek Jacobi in the title role. Two years later, she directed the film adaptation of Shakespeare 's As You Like It ( based on the play As You Like It ), whose action instead of playing in the Ardennes forest in the London district of Rotherhithe populated by homeless people.
